Author/Artist Review

Author: Hon S. Hoh

Tell us a little about yourself.  Based in Melbourne, Hon Hoh is the international director of Living Impact Inc., a nondenominational Christian mission reaching the “10/40 Window” for Christ. He has been a pastor in Australia for over ten years. A graduate of the University of Melbourne, the Bible College of Victoria, and Harvest Bible College (M.A.), Hon worked in the field of social welfare prior to becoming a pastor. He is married to Ling and they have three wonderful children.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I see the Revelation as one of the most relevant books of the bible to our day and age. This is contrary to what many Christians think, most of whom openly confess their difficulty in understanding it. I remembered preaching at a conference where a pastor freely confessed to me that he is confused about the Apocalypse. I was asking if he thought it would be useful in the future to teach a series on the Revelation. His answer was an absolute and unequivocal yes. There is a real need for Christians to understand the book. The world has entered the third millennium. Apocalyptic speculations could possibly increase. In such times I would like to see that Christians are able to speak confidently with their friends and colleagues regarding the book of Revelation. I would love to see the truths and perspective contained in Revelation motivate them as they have motivated me to be a more committed follower of Jesus. I believe Christians are missing out significantly when they fail to comprehend the Revelation. This is especially so when the book was divinely inspired to be read, understood and obeyed. Wasn’t that the reason John wrote it under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit? ‘Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near’ (Rev 1:3). I remember being invited to present an overview of the book to a home fellowship group where a member asked if it was really necessary for Christians to understand the Revelation! I do not blame Christians one moment for not grasping or appreciating the book. After all, I have been in that situation for years where I did not value its importance simply because I could not comprehend it. But now that I grasp the simplicity of its message and the power of its perspective, I want others to share in the liberation I have experienced.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  It has been quite a number of years since I first studied the book in depth and since then I have preached it as an expository series three times at three different churches. The first was to a small inner-city church. The second was to a larger suburban congregation of 500. The third was to another suburban church where I was the teaching pastor. From the feedback I have received, all have greatly appreciated the 22- sermon series. One person wrote to me saying: “Your exposition on the book of Revelation has helped me to discover the power and the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ in the midst of hurtful, chaotic and uncertain times in this world.” My conviction is that the book of Revelation can be studied and understood without excessive speculation. It is powerful in the perspective it offers to those living at the commencement of a new century. It is highly relevant to us who live in the environmentally conscious global village. Its comprehension is absolutely necessary for Christians wanting to make a difference in a world where some of the prophecies are being and will be fulfilled. The book of Revelation is not dispensable diet for the everyday believer. It must not be relegated only to the realm of the theological seminary. It is a book for you and me. Risen Lamb, Empowered Saints: Book of Revelation Made Easy was written with this in mind. It is easy to understand. It is practical and applicable. You can enjoy it as a book or as a daily devotional. It can be used as a Bible study tool as each chapter contains study and discussion questions. It is not a commentary. I did not write it as a theologian or an exegete. I wrote it as a pastor. For more information and reviews on the book, please visit the Living Impact website (www.livingimpact.org).
