Tell us a little about yourself. I serve as Associate Pastor of 12,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, where I lead our SATURDAY NIGHT congregation. My wife, Mauri, and I have three children and love mountain biking and skiing. We feel privileged to serve God's people, and hope to spend our lives in pastoral ministry.
What was your motivation behind this project? After several years of ministry to young adults, a few common themes emerged from the thousand conversations over lattes at Starbucks. None is more prevelant than this: I'm here--waiting tables, framing houses, flipping burgers, whatever--but I feel like God's called me HERE. How do I get from point A to point B? What do I do to live into the calling of God for my life? What they were asking, in essence, is what do I do in the meantime?
What do you hope folks will gain from this project? As New Testament believers, God has a calling for everyone of us. The process of realizing that calling, though, is not typically instantaneous or effortless. The Bible prescribes several practical, proactive ways to live into the calling of God. I hope to unpack and delineate some of those practices for proactive waiting.
Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists? Earnest Hemingway taught me to write and Scott Fitzgerald gave me a love for language. Tender is the Night and The Sun Also Rises had a profound effect on me as a college student, and they are probably most responsible for my becoming a writer. C.S. Lewis gave me a love for explaining theology in practical terms, Dietrich Bonhoeffer inspired me to persuade people for Christ, and Ted Haggard showed me that there's no higher calling than a local church.
