Author/Artist Review

Tell us a little about yourself.  I grew up in west Tennessee, but have lived in east central Illinois since 1982. My husband and I have been married 33 years and we have three grown children and one absolutely gorgeous granddaughter.

I started writing in 1999 after attending my first writers' conference (Write-to-Publish)at Wheaton College. Since then, I've written devotionals, articles, newspaper features for my hometown newspaper, and two books.

What was your motivation behind this project?  I wanted to examine the lives of Biblical women and see what life lessons their stories hold for women today. What can we learn from their successes, their failures, the way they interacted with God and with other people? Even the women who are barely mentioned in the Bible are included for a purpose. I also wanted to take a more in-depth look at these women's lives than many commentaries do--to try to understand their motivations, their emotions, and the influences that led them to make the choices that they did.

What do you hope folks will gain from this project?  My desire would be for readers to have a renewed appreciation for how relevant God's Word is to contemporary life. Even though the women in the Bible had different lifestyles, they faced the same basic problems, emotions, needs, and struggles that we do today. They also had the opportunity to follow the same God Who still reaches out to women today and longs to make them His daughters. I hope the devotionals offer women comfort and encouragement in their daily walk with this God Who never changes.

How were you personally impacted by working on this project?  Once I made the effort to relate to Biblical women on a personal level, from the perspective of my own experiences and emotions, they became more real to me than before. I discovered some kindred spirits along the way. They also taught me some surprising things about myself. For example, Delilah's nagging showed me that sometimes I have a similar unspoken attitude toward God: "If you really loved me..." Although I've never killed a man with a tent peg like Jael, I have been guilty of using killing words like Michal.

Who are your influences, sources of inspiration or favorite authors / artists?  I consider the biggest influence on my writing to be the many years of Precept Bible studies that I've done. These inductive studies, along with Kay Arthur's teaching, helped me build a solid foundation in God's Word before I began writing. I love to read classic literature by authors like Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy, George Eliot, and Jane Austen. I also get inspired by creative writers like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Nature and history are also great sources of inspiration for me.
